The temple bells rang at dawn, and with them came the kind of silence that only exists in places where time moves differently.
I had left my notebook at the ryokan, and walking through the bamboo grove I noticed the way the light arrives , in slow horizontal sheets, filtered through stalks like columns of pale green glass.
